During their two-week internship, the Hub participants acquire both practical and theoretical knowledge.
On September 19, the Media Mobility Hub participants met with well-known media personalities. Specifically, with Darya Yurovska, a media manager and one of the architects of the system of Public Broadcasting.
Standards, journalistic challenges, changes in media work since the 90s, differences between the work of a journalist and a blogger, audience’s role were discussed via examples.
Darya Yurkovska on compliance with journalistic ethics in Ukraine: ”When you see, hear or read about someone speaking against a particular article or a program, there is a 99% chance that it is about tools used wrongly. In my opinion, we almost don’t have problems with ethics in journalism.”
On the audience: “The biggest question is why we are here and for who we are speaking. Whatever we think we’ve come here for, we’ve come here for the audience. Our biggest challenge is that we don’t know our audience and even don’t respect it a bit. Nevertheless, those people influence us a lot.”
On journalistic standards: “Journalists at Deutsche Welle like to ask in the context of Donbas occupation: “Why don’t you give the floor to the other side? Here, you’ve got Ukrainian soldiers, and there, DNR”. I found it hard to answer this question for myself. But then you take the journalistic standards – there are six of them and they’re easy to learn – and start looking into what the other side is about. And you come to realize that DNR is not the other side at all.”
This journalism internship is made possible with the support of USAID Media Program in Ukraine, implemented by Internews, and with the support of private patrons.
