The development of quality independent media is a key factor in countering information threats

This was emphasized by the participants in the expert media lunch “Information security in the context of a possible escalation of military confrontation” that took place on June 1, at the initiative of the Chairman of the Board of Souspilnist Foundation.

The experts discussed a number of issues of the media “agenda” for Ukraine, as well as analyzed the process of formation of the International Center for Countering Disinformation and the Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security.

According to the participants in the meeting, proper attention should be paid to scenarios for possible events already today, including the issue of cybersecurity, because in the event of an escalation of military confrontation, it will be important to protect the critical infrastructure to ensure smooth operation of the media system. This also requires regular training of newsroom staff in the special conditions of a possible “blocking” of information platforms.

During the media lunch, the possibilities to limit the political influence of big businesses on the media, the use of legislative and self-regulatory tools to resolve the conflicts of interest caused by political mergers, key media outlets and businessmen were also discussed.

According to the experts, it is important to encourage parliamentarians, in particular the Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy, to engage public sector media representatives to work on the draft law “On Oligarchs”.

The experts also discussed the need to strengthen the work and coordination among communication departments of the main state bodies to enhance information security and effective provision of information, as well as to facilitate journalists’ work. Following the initiatives expressed at the previous meetings, the participants in the discussion spoke in favor of abolishing the title of “Merited Journalist” as a rudiment of the communist system.
