During an expert discussion on March 24, Ukrainian media experts analyzed the threats to journalists’ safety during the Russia-Ukraine war. The event was organized by Souspilnist Foundation, with the support of Internews Ukraine, Detector Median, and the Independent Media Council.
According to media experts, the main issues at hand requiring swift solutions are:
- developing precise work mechanisms in the event of journalists’ capture;
- recommendations for working in the occupied territories;
- life insurance for journalists.
In the month of a full-scale invasion, Russia has committed 148 crimes against journalists and media in Ukraine. As of March 24, five journalists have been killed while doing their professional duty, seven have been injured, and one journalist is missing. At least six cases of journalists being taken hostage and ill-treated by Russians are known.
That is why Souspilnist Foundation and our partners are initiating the creation of the International Insurance Support Fund for Journalists.
