The media lunch “Why does critical thinking need to have practical application in journalism?” was dedicated to discussing the development of critical thinking in journalistic work as opposed to chasing sensations, totally trusting in social networks and spreading designed manipulation.
Participating in the lunch were students at journalism schools and the special guest, Adrian Karmazyn, chief of the Ukrainian Service of the Voice of America (2005-2015).
The discussion centered around the visit of Ukraine’s President to the USA and, specifically, the coverage of Volodymyr Zelensky’s meeting with Joe Biden.
The discussion touched on what journalists should pay special attention to, being careful when using a broad array of information sources in daily editorial work including social networks, and also doing thorough research of the topic using expert opinions.
The participants noted that this visit was paid much attention in the Ukrainian information space while in the US media, topics related to Afghanistan prevailed.
US media do not always meet the information needs regarding Ukraine, but influential newsrooms set an example by following their editorial policy. For instance, the analytical article by The New York Times about the meeting and agreements of the presidents is an example of what we could aspire to, stressed Adrian Karmazyn.
The participants also discussed that, in addition to official results and agreements, journalists should take into account special moments of the visit’s schedule that are important for understanding the context.
Another important aspect of journalistic practice is to take critically any statements or comments made by politicians of the aggressor country, fact-checking them to avoid spreading unreliable information that may eventually even lead to disrupting bilateral relations or the public mood in partner countries.
During the event, the participants emphasized the importance of fact-checking in the work of reporters and in countering information inflows and propaganda.
