On April 8, Souspilnist Foundation hosted a free webinar “News reporting: How to tell a story” as part of the Media Mobility Hub and the Open Media Stories Initiative.
The lecturer was Olesia Yaremchuk, a publisher, journalist and master of journalistic story.
Olesia Yaremchuk singled out 10 main cases of creating a news story:
— dress down, be that “fly on the wall” [i.e. do not stand out of the general context of life of main characters];
— use the three C rule: слухати (listen), співпереживати (sympathize), спостерігати (observe);
— make sure to visit the venue;
— pretend to not know something;
— ask why and how, avoiding closed questions;
— try to make a closer connection;
— try to talk to a person without onlookers;
— be a bit of a psychiatrist, it does not pay to force things out of a person;
— train your memory, do not fail to make notes;
— filter information. The characters may want you to tell the story their own way; send them quotations but not the whole text; do not let them correct what you saw..
To learn about who or what can be the topic of the story, how to not scare the main character, what is most important in a news story – watch the following video:
The event took place with the support of Detector Media and the Independent Media Council.
